Portraits of the Zuiderzee
Summer 2020.
A pandemic had made our world small. It urged me to step outside, to seek open space. Accompanied by my camera, I stepped onto the dyke just outside my hometown of Monnickendam. That first step marked the beginning of a hike around the former Zuiderzee, completed in stages and finally coming to an end this summer (2024). Along the way, walking the boundary between sea and land, I was struck by the silent movement that constantly reshapes the landscape.
What began as a simple walk to the next village along the water evolved into a unique series that brings together much of what matters most to me as a creative: memories of my flat birthplace in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, my enduring love for the Dutch landscape, its clouds, the silence and its water.
